An excerpt from "Your Foal: Essential Training for the Young Horse":

This book is one big check list, "Can my baby do x, y and z without stress and upon request, yes or no? If he can't do x, I don't move to y until he can." Be conscious of this not only from one day's session to the next, but between each paragraph. Here in Day Three we have four things to accomplish, four things to check off our lists before continuing on to tomorrow's material. 1) I want you to be able to honestly say that you see and understand when your baby's sending warning signals or alternatively, when he's comfortable with what's happening. 2) You need to understand the difference between a horse that's trying and one that's not. 3) You should be able to put the halter on and take it back off, including past those ears, while your horse's head stays down and he remains calm and agreeable. 4) Your horse must coolly stand after you've taken the halter off until you release him. Your response to each of these statements must be "Yes, got it." If it's "Kind of" you are not allowed to move on. (I'll know you cheated if you call me or another pro trainer several years now and offer to pay us big money to come fix one of these issues.)
